Automating the Migration of Legacy DB2 Workflows to BigQuery at Scale
Motivus helped one of LATAM largest banks replace months of manual SQL rewriting with autonomous AI agents, migrating thousands of mission-critical data workflows to Google BigQuery faster, more accurately, and with full regulatory traceability.
Freeing a Major Bank from Decades of Legacy SQL
This bank manages 1.05 trillion pesos across 20 million customers and 1000+ branches. Following its separation from a major global bank and in preparation for a planned IPO, the bank needed to accelerate technology independence with board-level visibility on modernization milestones and zero margin on CNBV regulatory deadlines. Thousands of mission-critical workflows covering risk reporting, regulatory submissions, credit scoring, and customer analytics were locked inside legacy IBM DB2 systems, each requiring 4-6 weeks of manual engineering to migrate. Motivus was brought in to change that equation entirely.
Manual Migration at This Scale Was No Longer Viable
Decades of accumulated SQL logic, undocumented dependencies, and tightly coupled stored procedures meant every workflow required manual rewriting, line-by-line validation, and compliance sign-off. Senior engineers were consumed by repetitive rewrite-and-validate cycles instead of strategic work. Audit gaps opened during transition windows. DB2-specific constructs (MQTs, temporal tables, OLAP functions) resisted straightforward translation, and CNBV regulatory deadlines left absolutely no schedule margin for a slow, manual approach.
What We Did
An autonomous agent that ingests legacy DB2 SQL - stored procedures, nested views, scheduling logic - resolves cross-schema dependencies, generates optimized GoogleSQL, validates against production-equivalent datasets, self-corrects iteratively, and produces audit-ready traceability reports.
A compliance-aware agent that identifies AML reporting, credit risk, and CNBV regulatory workflows, prioritizes them by deadline, and applies stricter zero-tolerance validation thresholds before any cutover to production.
Builds migration waves, identifies cross-workflow dependencies, proposes validation scope per workflow family, and produces review plans with acceptance criteria and risk flags - keeping the entire backlog organized and governed.
Centralized documentation of DB2-to-BigQuery translation patterns, lineage mappings, and assumptions - reducing rework across waves, enforcing consistent decisions, and building a compounding knowledge asset aligned to CNBV and IPO-readiness scrutiny.
A Years-Long Manual Roadmap Completed in Months
The first production batch of 120+ workflows was executed on schedule, meeting CNBV deadlines with full audit trails. Migration ran 3.5x faster than manual baselines. Post-migration defects dropped 85%. Every migrated workflow carries full column-level lineage, source-to-target mapping, and validation reports stored in BigQuery metadata layers. Projected annual savings of $2.1M from DB2 license retirement and GCP optimization with a follow-on engagement already scoped for the remaining batch and real-time streaming workloads.
3.5X FASTER MIGRATION
Across all workflow categories versus manual rewrite baselines, with 85% fewer post-migration defects.
100% ON-SCHEDULE COMPLIANCE
Every compliance-critical workflow migrated on time. CNBV deadlines met. Full audit trails preserved throughout.
$2.1M PROJECTED ANNUAL SAVINGS
From DB2 license retirement and GCP optimization, with a foundation in place for remaining workloads.
